Southern California Shaken by Two Earthquakes – What You Need to Know

By BizBuzzUp

On Saturday, Southern California was struck by two notable earthquakes occurring within just 30 minutes. The tremors, with initial magnitudes of 3.5 and 3.9, rattled millions of residents and underscored the region’s persistent seismic risks.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the first quake happened at 10:05 a.m., centered about 4.3 miles southeast of Ontario. Less than 30 minutes later, at 10:34 a.m., a stronger quake with a magnitude of 3.9 struck nearly the same area, about 4.4 miles southeast of Ontario. Fortunately, as of 10:40 a.m., no injuries or significant damage have been reported.

The Seismic Reality of Southern California

Earthquakes are a common occurrence in California. Known for its tectonic activity, the state experiences thousands of tremors each year. Although most are minor, several hundred reach a magnitude of 3.0 annually, with about 15 to 20 exceeding magnitude 4.0, according to the USGS. Interestingly, Alaska sees even more seismic events than California.

Key Safety Measures During an Earthquake

Being prepared and knowing how to react during an earthquake is vital. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) provides essential guidelines to help you stay safe. Here’s a quick overview:

Drop, Cover, and Hold On:

  • Drop: At the first sign of shaking, drop down onto your hands and knees to avoid falling and to stay low for safety.
  • Cover: Shield your head and neck with one arm, and if possible, take cover under a sturdy table or desk. If shelter isn’t available, crouch next to an interior wall away from windows, protecting vital organs as you bend over.
  • Hold On: Stay in place until the shaking stops. If you’re under shelter, hold onto it firmly and be ready to move with it if it shifts.

Stay Alert and Ready

Knowing what to do before, during, and after an earthquake can greatly improve your safety. Stay updated on seismic activity in your area and have an emergency plan ready.

For live updates and more earthquake preparedness tips, consult trusted sources such as the USGS and California Department of Public Health websites. Being proactive can help protect you and your family during unexpected tremors.
